Google is experimenting with crowdfunding. The web giant launched Google Contributor. The service is designed to let readers pay a monthly fee for websites that they frequently visit, in exchanging for seeing no Google ads.

The service currently has  10 publishing partners and readers can select the amount they want to contribute per month (the available options are $1, $2 or $3 a month).

The service is currently by invitation only.

The service is basically a paid ad-blocking service. Instead of users using third-party ad-blocking tools to block unwanted ads, Google is asking users to pay them directly to block ads.

It's an intriguing concept, but why would people be willing to pay a monthly fee when they can just pay a one-time fee for a really good ad-blocking program? I'm curious to see whether or not Contributor will take-off.
