Later this month and for one week only (from Jan. 23 to 29)150 Imax theaters in the US will be screening the final two episodes of the previous season of HBO's Game of Thrones along with an an exclusive trailer of the upcoming season.

This marks the first time that a TV series will appear on Imax screens.

Granted, the $6 million to $10 million an episode budget and production quality of Game of Thrones is higher than most TV shows and even low budget films, it is still a surprising move by both Imax and HBO to put Game of Thrones on the ultra big screens.

So should we expect more TV shows to appear in Imax theaters? I think it's highly likely as media companies compete to make their content a mega event. The Weinstein Company is already planning to release the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon simultaneously on Netflix and in select Imax theaters. It would not be difficult to imagine Marvel editing the 8 episodes of Agent Carter for Imax as it preps fans for upcoming Marvel blockbusters.

Interestingly, this means that films are now not just competing with each other to secure the Imax screens, but possibly TV shows and other content too. Imax has been testing out its technology for the screening of live events like sports and concerts. Ultimately, this means that Imax is not restricting itself only to film and we can expect to see a popular content, regardless of whether it's TV or a live event, on the super wide screens.
